I'M BACK!FIRST OF ALL, I am so, so, so sorry that I have not updated this blog in forever. As some of you might know, I started college in August, and I JUST finished my first semester! Naturally, I've been a little preoccupied with school, so I haven't written...well, anything, really, for several months. I'm going to try and overload on writing over the break and keep a relatively consistent level of updates as the next semester begins! College has been fantastic, and I can't wait to tell you all about the cool film opportunities that I've discovered here at the University of Louisville. ABOVE: Film professor gave us extra credit if we showed up to class in costume. You know I had to pay homage to David Lynch by being Shelly from Twin Peaks. Amazingly, U of L has fantastic film programs and Louisville itself has a killer moviemaking scene. I've learned all about this through my Intro to Film professor, Remington Smith, who has directed several short films and Rubbertown, a feature-length documentary about the rubber factories of Louisville. From him, I learned about the Louisville Film Society and its Short Film Slam, where I was introduced to the works of so many fantastic Louisville directors! I'll add some links below so you can explore, as well. U of L also has a club called the Film Liberation Unit (FLU). They help program movies in our University theater, the Floyd. I haven't been part of a programming project yet, but I think next semester I might find the opportunity to do so. We also just kind of recommend movies to each other and throw movie nights! There is a Film minor at U of L. While I'm currently on the track to an English degree, I've definitely considered exploring Communications. Film would be an offshoot of Communications. Perhaps in the future I'll find more ways to focus in on the study of film! On campus, we have the Speed Art Museum, which also has a cinema attached to it. The Speed Cinema has hosted fantastic events; and while there are so many I could mention, I'll only make a list of what I have been able to see. -Eraserhead -Mulholland Dr -David Lynch: The Art Life (Yes, there was definitely a trend for a while) -Louisville Film Society Short Film Slam -Special Restoration Screening of Vertigo (with an interview with the restorer at the end!) -Paris, Texas: Presented by the Harry Dean Stanton Festival There is so much more that will be showing next year, and I can't wait to tell you all about everything I'll get to see or be involved in! Links to Louisville DirectorsRivera-Sennett: the brilliant, electric duo who made Vacancy in the Night, a jazzy, hilarious short film which has since proven to be one of my favorites.
http://www.rivera-sennett.com Remington Smith: my professor! Learn more about Rubbertown, or, if you prefer, watch his short films (a lot are horror films)! http://www.theremingtonsmith.com Max Moore: Another favorite at the Short Film Slam, Moore has directed a lot of music videos, but I saw his ridiculously clever short film, Door to Door. http://www.maxmoorefilms.com I'll post about some more later if you all would like, but these were just a few standouts I wanted to mention! See you soon!
